Decoding the Chinese luxury consumer

On April 16, Stephen Morgan, Managing Director of Lifestyle & Media Advisory, joined industry leaders at Plug and Play’s Paris offices for Jing Daily’s “Rewiring Luxury: AI, China and Brand Innovation” event — a timely conversation unlocking the future of luxury innovation: from the structural trends defining APAC to real-world AI implementation across fashion, beauty, and consumer goods.

With over 40 senior executives and investors in attendance, the event started with an interview with Nicolas Rieul, founder of Actionable, a French startup specializing in predictive analysis of customer satisfaction through artificial intelligence, and included a panel discussion with Philip Meyer of Noble Panacea and Yuan Zou of Zadig & Voltaire on their own experiences entering and operating in China.

The discussion underscored a reality that remains unchanged despite recent market volatility: China is not just important to luxury — it is foundational. Short-term fluctuations may shape quarterly narratives, but they do not alter the structural trajectory of the market.

Yet what is changing — rapidly — is the Chinese luxury consumer.

Historically, luxury consumption in China was heavily influenced by Western trends, with brand heritage and visibility acting as primary drivers. Today, the market has evolved into a far more complex push-pull dynamic. Chinese consumers are more sophisticated, more discerning, and more empowered than ever before. They are no longer simply adopting global luxury codes — they are actively redefining them.

Chinese aesthetics, cultural narratives, and digital trends are now influencing global audiences, often going viral on Western social media platforms as consumers seek novelty and authenticity.

Stephen Morgan also presented the latest insights into this evolving landscape, highlighting four key consumer archetypes shaping luxury demand:

  • Gen Z - redefining luxury through self-expression and community, moving beyond traditional status signals
  • Millennials - shifting toward more considered consumption, with a focus on quality, longevity, and personal taste
  • Cultural Consumer - reflecting a growing emphasis on identity, provenance, and culturally resonant storytelling
  • Silver Economy – representing a significant opportunity, driven by affluent consumers with evolving lifestyle priorities.
Across all segments, expectations have risen. Chinese consumers now demand greater relevance and more personalized engagement — with AI emerging as a key enabler for brands to keep pace.

As highlighted in Jing Daily’s recent analysis, The 5 ways luxury can rebuild its China playbook, success will depend on brands’ ability to localize not just execution, but mindset.

For luxury brands, the implication is clear: winning in China today demands understanding and not just presence.

At Phronesis Partners, we continue to support clients in decoding these shifts and translating them into actionable growth strategies.
